Equal opportunity in employment also means enabling staff the opportunity to access the relevant conditions of employment, irrespective of personal attributes and to work in an environment free from discrimination, harassment and bullying.

Content of applications and addressing the selection criteria

Applicants who apply online are required to complete necessary information fields and upload their Curriculum Vitae and Selection Criteria responses.

Curriculum Vitae should include information on the personal details, qualifications, education and training, employment history, and the skills and experience of the applicant, as well as 3 referees and their current contact details.

The Selection Criteria represent the qualifications, experience, skills and attributes a person is required to have to perform well in the position.

The basis for an applicant being shortlisted for an interview for the position is determined by a Selection Committee considering an applicants suitability in the context of their answers to the selection criteria requirements. Hence applications which do not address the selection criteria may not be considered.

Statement addressing selection criteria

Each selection criterion should be addressed separately and used as a title in the same order as appears on the advertisement.

  • Structure your answers (one or two paragraphs) under each heading demonstrating how your knowledge, experience and abilities meet the particular criterion.
  • Provide tangible examples to quantify your understanding and experience of the criterion eg "I was responsible for organising a conference with 90 staff...this involved...."
  • Where possible you may wish to highlight how successful you were at achieving your task eg you received positive feedback about the conference you organised and your efforts have been recognised with responsibility for managing a larger event.
  • If you have lots of experience it is a good idea to emphasise the extent of this eg "For the past 7 years I have worked in University libraries....." . If you have limited experience then mention relevant training courses you have attended.
  • Read the position description tasks and responsibilities to provide context of what to include in your answers to the selection criteria.

You may want to adopt the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Results) method of answering Selection Criteria that require an example of your experience:

Situation: What was the situation in relation to your work role?

Task: What needed to be achieved? What obstacles did you overcome?

Action: What were the steps you took?

Results: What was the outcome?
